Normal ones last 150-180k miles. California cars have tighter tolerances when O2 sensors measure the cat efficiency (and the cats are special anway).

I would try first to replace upstream O2 sensor on that cat.

Hi sonic,

thanks but I've already replaced both sensors. I had a diagnostic run and it's the cat and they are pretty expensive here, between 5-600 dollars plus labor. it's a nice car but having to replace all of them is a little to much for me. anybody out of state want a nice wagon?

Put an ad on CL in a state without emissions, that's close to you :) Unfortunately AZ has emission testing and the cars have to meet the original specs.

I would like another wagon... but I am too far away.

Hi SoNic,

thanks, I thought of that but after perusing the used car prices I decided to bite the bullet and fix her up. she's a really good car and everything works well, so home she stays

I just made my own, for off-road testing purposes only (of course), and somehow the CEL did not come back.....

Illinois does too, a little bit.

Painted mine flat black high temp.

No one noticed. Hypothetically, of course....

Those EPA inspectors are no smarter than the double digit IQ TSA folks. If it looks OEM, they won't notice it on physical inspection.

Well, if you where lucky, then more power to you :)

I was expecting that a state inspection guy to know about the O2 sensor cancelers/deleters/defoulers by now (eBay is full of them), and to be on the lookout for them, especially for older cars like ours.

One for each bank of cylinders and the 3rd to keep the EAP happy. You can delete the 3rd cat and have no issues. along no CEL plus gain some throttle response.
