My 2003 Centennial has about 157,000 miles on it right now. I'm wondering if or possibly when my alternator might give out. 

I'm planning on a few trips this fall and a trip to the Nationals next year, I don't want to be stranded somewhere, in a strange place, waiting for an alternator.

Duratec 3.0 don't have alt failure. Known plenty that have gone into 200k, original, never replaced!  Mine at 190 I replaced just because voltage regulator was a little

worn. It could I tmrw.  You never know.  I suggest buy a motorcraft reman on rock auto and let it go.

You should be good if your going to do trips make sure your battery is fully charged also

I know it is an old post but here there is: My previous Duratec alternator died at around 190K miles. Replacement is a bitch, if fails when out of town, and at the shop's mercy, the cost will be $900. I have a friend that said "if is not broke don't fix it" and end up with that expensive lesson.

I should have researched it more, but it's too late to undo the safelite installation. It will do for now as it solves the pitting/vision problem.  I definitely wouldn't recommend them to anyone. If this was a newer car and I was willing to spend more I would go elsewhere.

How do you know if the alternator is failing ??

Weak voltage output. Random electrical issues. Dying battery. Typically an alternator will just suddenly die, but sometimes they will linger on a little while with the above symptoms. When the alternator does suddenly, you may or may not get a burning smell, either from the belt slipping on a locked pulley or the diodes burning up in the regulator. The battery light on the instrument cluster will illuminate. If the output is just weak, you may not get the battery light, but the battery may act as if it's on the way out. Anytime you perform a battery or alternator test, make sure the battery is fully charged before you begin.
