Popping Noise At Low Speeds

Recommended Posts

For the past year or so, every so often when I would be turning and driving slowly (like a drive thru) there would be a popping/clunking noise in the front left. Kind of shrugged it off but now its getting worse with repeated popping and it happens just about every time now. Replaced the endlinks a few weeks ago so I know it's not the endlinks. Also it never happens during higher speeds and it seems to happen more if i have more people in the car. Could it be a wheel bearing? Maybe an axle? Maybe you guys have an idea? huh.gif

wheel bearings make a whining noise. I'd suspect your ball joints especially if your car is high mileage and they have never been replaced before.

Ball joints, axle, tie rods....

That's what first comes to mind.

Wheel bearings also.

Jack up the offending wheel and try to shake in various directions...

up & down -- ball joint

left & right -- end links & more

take off the wheel and get some pics of your ball joints, tie rod ends, etc...

Adio, if you haven't already replaced your strut assemblies, it's possible that your strut mount could be making the popping noise.

Could also be the actual sway bar bushings. They ar welded on the the genIV's and sometimes they wear out.

I ground them off on my son's and put old fashioned ones on.

It's down the line on things to check out but definitely needs checked.

Springs were replaced a few years ago, but not sure if the shop changed out the strut mounts tho. The top bolt on the strut assembly looks new if that means anything.

I'm having the exact same problem on my Sable. I suspected the suspension. What have you figured out, adio? Anything yet?

On a related note: I'm going to see about getting my car to the mechanic on 8/10, to investigate this sound and to give me a general checkup. I'm taking the car on a road trip to Arkansas in about a month.

Thanks guys!

Mine was making that sound a while ago and I think it was just a loose tie rod...
