Scarlett: 1987 Mercury Sable (A Low Mileage Survivor)

Recommended Posts

OK ladies and gentlemen, some more progress made on the Sable today. The power brake booster is replaced, and cruise control is definitely functional!

I have also got a list of the next repairs necessary- both rear swaybar endlinks are broken, the AXOD servo cover gasket is leaking, and so are the hard lines that run between the transmission casing and each side of the trans cooler. The parking brake system definitely needs to be redone (still a very minor vacuum leak/hissing from the auto-release mechanism), and I also have a burned out bulb in the dash clock. :(

I went out and warmed up the Sable tonight, want to make sure that it doesn't sit without starting for very long until I get a new battery for it. Here are the main menu choices on a Gen 1 Taurus/Sable electronic instrument cluster:

And it looks kind of sinister at night:

Thanks, Chris.

Today after work, I put in a plastic windshield mounting clip for my I-Pass transponder, which is used for traveling on the Illinois Tollway Authority's system. The Taurus already has the same clip, so now I can move my one transponder between them as needed. This wireless device automatically charges toll fees on the tollways in IL and IN, and (I think) PA, NJ, and NY too.

As long as your transponder is compatible with the EZ-Pass system it will work in PA. Mine is attached to the windshield by 2 velcro-inspired strips behind the rearview mirror. You can't even see it from the driver's seat. Makes using toll roads so EZ. I get a discount for having it too. I think I pay 25% less than motorists using cash.

Would probably work in Ohio too, i think West Virginia and one of the carolinas has ez pass too

Edit, found this

So I can drive from Chicago to the Atlantic seaboard without tossing any coins into a toll booth. B) Most excellent.

Picking up a new 610cca battery for Scarlett after work tonight. ;)

Just wanted to say that the old Sable is looking good with those 16" wheels. My neighbor has a blue gen4 sable with those same wheels, they look good in both cases.

Later last night, the snowfall that we got here was deeper than in the photo. And that's the end of discussion about snow in my Sable thread.

Indeed. Consider putting an LED in there?
