The State of Arkansas thinks my Sable is worth mint coin apparently.  I went to pay my property taxes this morning to renew my tags and was shocked when the lady told me it would be 158.00 in personal property tax.  I told her there was no way....to which she told me that prior I had the Avalon, Cadillac, and 92 Sable listed( tax was 88.00 for all three) and by switching the Avalon to the Sable it increased the tax to 105.00 just on the Sable and the rest were between the other two cars( Cadillac and now 89 Sable).  I was floored, but paid it because I had no choice.  The 09 is not worth anything...probably as much as the Avalon is considering the word Toyota makes them hold their value no matter how old.  Then my tag fee was 64 dollars and some change...so $222.00 total.  I was disappointed.  I had expected about 130-140, but I was way off.  Then on the way home a dog ran out in front of me and I hit it....luckily I was watching it pretty close and it only got the rubber air dam underneath and just barely.  It was a small dog...so it yelped off otherwise unhurt, as far as I could tell.  Luckily also no damage to the car.  This day has started off pretty sorry.

I drove this pickup yesterday. Pic is the only time I ever drove it before, belongs to one guy, trailer to another, daughter's move, I was a one time only driver. No hookup adapter so no lights. Drove back roads and my daughter followed so some doofus would not tailgate and expect to see lights. Truck is old, beat up inside, 225K miles, 4wheel drive, 350 auto. Yesterday made 5 trips about one mile each way hauling brush. No trailer of course.

It drives like a TRUCK. But: Hit the key and it fires off on the first cylinder, so quick it surprises me. What is unusual to me, tranny locks up cold, every gear. Shift is HARD, lockup is HARD. So it only unlocks for the shift, locksup near instantly. So it feels like a double shift.

ABS kicks in on every brake, but just buzzing the pedal.

One thing for sure, The GM 350 has loads of torque.

Glad it is not mine to maintain.

-chart-

The 5.7L 350ci small block was never available in the GMT800 trucks, most likely equipped with the Vortec 5300 5.3L V8. A decent motor when compared to the 5.4L Triton.

At Jeff's post.

I never really grasp how states base your registration fee based on vehicle worth, Wisconsin is so much easier. $75 for any vehicle with an AUTO plate, and price then varies based on the vehicles GWVR, bigger truck is heavier so it costs more to register.

Speaking of I just received the SHOs renewal notice in the mail today, hopefully the last one I will have to do for that car, next year I'll pay the collectors fee and be done with it.

Jan 31 and it's 60F in Upstate NY.

No snow in sight. :notworthy:

And on another note. Wife has had the Lin Cont die couple times when first started cold overnight. Happened to me this am. Was parket with the wheel well of to one side and after started I pulled the wheel to center same time I put it in gear, it shook and died. My third INTECH so I know they idle fast and slow down to normal quickly but it is a high compression engine so it needs to settle a bit. OK so I think I got it now.

Guess I am really old school. It seems to be 5.3L Vortec. GM has so many engines in that line I could not keep up. Only GM truck I have driven since I drove a U-Haul 454 gas auto loaded with furniture, and towing '98 Bull behind on a dolly. 2000 year. My memory says it would really move but needed to be wound up to get going. I drove it flat out ~70 mph across KS, MO, IL, IN, OH, PA, NY.

The Vortec in the pickup seems to have lots of torque right at off idle.

But I have no interest in pickups or U-Haul.

I've always preferred GM's 5.3 over Ford's 5.4. Less issues, good torque, cheap to run.

I pulled the 89 Wagon back from South Carolina with an 09 Tahoe 5.3 and it pulled that car effortlessly in tow mode and still got 15 MPG!  I was very impressed with it.  If I could afford one I would have one in my driveway.  The only thing I disliked was the fact that the interior buttons had the finish wearing off of them at only 59K miles and the stupid power folding mirror button is in a bad place.  I must've folded those things in 3 or 4 times on the interstate before I got used to it.  Otherwise it was a great truck and was comfortable on long hauls.

My perfect Mid-2000's truck would be an F150 Crew Cab with a Chevy 5.3 in it.

I think it has been far too long since the group has had a laugh at this.

We've all seen it, and we will all laugh again

On paper the 3 valve 5.4L is superior to the 5.3L, its just that the engine is so inconsistent in its reliability. Some will run 200k without any problems and others will be knocking and throwing timing guides at 80,000 miles.  Proper maintenance really is a big factor on the 3 valve Tritons, religious oil changes, the proper grade of oil and a good oil filter are critical on those engines.

Has anybody here ever dealt with a warranty claim through rock auto? I have heard that the coil pack on my old 03 has failed causing a cylinder 5 misfire. And there should be a one year warranty (I purchased the coil 2-21-15) just curious how it works. If I should bother trying to warranty it or if I should just have them order a new pack and be done with it.

You'll have to pay to ship the old one back. Once they recieve tracking info they will ship you another. Or you can buy another and they will include an airbill for return shipping. Either way you're out shipping. If the part is cheap easier to just buy another. I don't buy warranty on rockauto. If I am concerned about warranty I buy local....much less hassle.

I'll agree that on paper you're correct. However I'll gladly take a small hit in hp/tq in return for removing most reliability concerns

First week at the new job, General Manger of Lopez Auto Repair and Diagnostics. New shop is coming along. I installed 3 lifts this week. My body is SO SORE! I haven't done this much physical labor in a while. But it's great. I needed it. Come home exhausted and stinky every night and loving it. Interviewed a mechanic, I think he will work well. Setting up commercial accounts and making connections with suppliers.

I'm completely new to all of this (except the wrenching part, but that's not my job). Lopez Auto is an independent shop and family business. Lopez Sr. started the business about 35 years ago. His son took over 15 years ago. We have been friends since grade school. My first job at 16 was sweeping floors in the shop. Now almost 25 years later, I'm leaving a career in radiology to manage an auto repair shop. I intend to promote the values of family and honesty that have made Lopez successful over the years.

Interviewed a young mechanic. Cocky little s**t. Asked if he could pass a drug test. "Gimme three days." He wanted to be paid in cash so he didn't have to pay child support on his three children. Um no.

I live in upstate NY and I could take a pic of sunshine and bare grouond. So nice I took a round through Pick A Part today. Needed a autolamp sensor + sun load sensor,  for the Lin. Got the sun load sensor which is separate for the Lin. Total $1.00. Big spender here. "50% OFF EVERYTHING IN THE YARD".

We are predicted "snow showers" 3 days next week.

We've still got substantial piles of snow melting every day. Then at night it freezes over. My parking lot is a skating rink in places.

Forcast here for Monday-Tuesday is snow showers as well.

I say we all go visit Luke in Texas ! Group Road Trip !  :drive:

Since the cold weather is hitting I figured I would fill the car up to be safe, and I thought to myself, today marks the day I have paid the lowest dollar/gallon for gasoline since I starting driving in 2007/8. $1.49/gal.  Less than $15 to fill the Subaru up from a 1/4 tank.

The corner Tom's had posted $ 1.88. I went to the grocery store, came back 20 mins later and it was $1.92.  I guess the lesson is get it while the price is down.
